Scholarships to Increase Access & Inclusion

JP Centre Yoga is committed to making the Boston yoga community more inclusive and, to that end, we offer two different types of scholarships:

1) Scholarship for People of Color

JP Centre Yoga partners with Yoga Diversity Initiative (YDI), a Boston-based organization with a strong mission “to make the practice of yoga more accessible to People of Color.”  In concert with YDI, JPCY offers this scholarship to a person of color who is specifically interested in teaching yoga following completion of this training program.  The recipient of the scholarship will be paired with a facilitator from Yoga Diversity Initiative for support before, during and after the training.  This scholarship funds the full tuition of the JPCY teacher training program for one individual.  Yoga Diversity Initiative provides 40% of the program’s tuition and JP Centre Yoga supplies the rest.

Scholarship Requirements:
- Have an existing regular yoga practice
- Be able to commit to all the dates of the training
- Be committed to teaching yoga locally after completing the training

Applications for POC scholarship are accepted until November 15th. All applicants will be notified by December 15th.

“As a Latina woman it is a huge honor to represent my culture in the world of yoga and to be able to guide other people of color in the healing benefits of this spiritual practice.” Z, Scholarship recipient

“Introducing the practice of yoga to others, especially some who like me, are looking for someone who has lived culturally similar experiences and knows the texture of some of my suffering, is an incredible honor.” Melissa, Scholarship recipient

“As someone who had grown up in Ecuador .. it made me very aware of the lack of teachers of color and how crucial this is towards continuing to support an inclusive and welcoming environment for people of all ages, backgrounds and social classes. I am grateful and humbled to be able to pay this forward, to collaborate and continue to work to make yoga accessible and affordable for all.” Shylah, Scholarship recipient

2) Scholarships for Teachers Committed to Increasing Access

JP Centre Yoga believes that yoga should be accessible to all.  Simultaneously, we understand that the way access to yoga currently exists in the United States is complex as is our role within that framework. We are interested in the practice of cultivating self awareness on the mat and off. One way we do this is by keeping our eyes open to our impact and our ears open to the ongoing conversation of how yoga functions within our own community and beyond.  With this intent, JPCY is offering a scholarship to any individual who is interested in primarily teaching to underserved populations - those who may not be able to normally afford or access yoga.

If you would like to see more yoga programs in facilities and neighborhoods that have any number of barriers to access yoga, this scholarship and teacher training program could help you take a step toward that goal.  How would you like to bring change by increasing access to yoga?  If you have a vision, tell us about it in your application.  We want to help you make it a reality!

Inspired to learn about my own yoga practice as a person who has for many years had the honor to work professionally alongside and be part of communities who are significantly stigmatized and misjudged by their own self identified coping skills to personal traumas and mental health difficulties while consistently misunderstood about their ability to value their own health and wellness due to others ideas of at risk behaviors, I was deeply humbled to be granted to participate in my 200hr Yoga Teacher Training through the Increased Access Scholarship at J.P. Yoga as an act of love to offer back to the communities above through each class. This beautiful opportunity allowed me to simultaneously invest in my own self-compassion and state of grace by slowing down and returning to myself while helping others brighten the dimmed light around being in touch with their own autonomy guided within their breathing, bodies and minds. Upon completion of my 200hr, I am in the process of volunteering with Hands to Heart Yoga in Boston, MA and excitedly plan to practice my teaching by holding space for young people in Juvenile Holding Centers, with people who use drugs at local  Needle Exchange Programs/Residential Treatment programs and potentially in partnership offering classes to Sex Workers through a local sex workers outreach project this Winter/Spring.  Raising Funds for our Increased Access scholarships:

To help raise money for these Increased Access scholarships, JPCY will be selling Namaste pins at the front desk of the studio.  All proceeds from these pin sales will go directly to this scholarship fund.  If you would prefer not to purchase a pin, but would like to support this scholarship fund, you can also many a donation online.

Tuition for the JPCY Teacher Training program is $3100.  We aim to raise $1550 via pin sales and donations that we will match dollar for dollar in order to fund one full scholarship for an individual’s whole tuition.  But that’s not all!  We also aim to raise an additional $775 that we will also match dollar for dollar to fund one partial scholarship that will pay for half of an individual’s program tuition.  In total, we aim to raise $2325.  Any additional funds raised will roll over toward future training scholarship funds.
