The Four Gates of the Body: Shoulder and Hip Mobility Reimagined with Andrea Fotopoulos

In the context of postural yoga practice, the poses are utilized to enhance body function and awareness. In yoga we rely heavily on the efficacy of the shapes to maintain mobility through the lens of increased strength and flexibility.

However, what occurs when the poses no longer yield the desired benefits or when one is unable to practice as before? In functional movement training, the emphasis is placed on improving the efficiency of our movement patterns.

Additionally, we train to achieve full ranges of mobility, enabling our major joints to effortlessly and smoothly execute poses without experiencing discomfort.

This 3-hour workshop aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to mobility training, focusing on the fundamental principles. Participants will engage in exercises that enhance their understanding of how strengthening and supporting the shoulder and hip joints (referred to as the 4 Gates of the Body) can benefit various movement practices such as yoga, running, walking, and weight training. By utilizing props and isolating specific muscles, we can gain insight into our body's natural abilities and identify any habitual movement patterns that may impact joint health.

The workshop will incorporate joint mobility work, including Controlled Articular Rotations and isometric Loading Strategies (PAILS and RAILS), which will be integrated into traditional yoga postural practice for a well-rounded experience. All individuals, regardless of their level of experience or abilities, are encouraged to participate.
