Perhaps the most tangible, visceral skill gleaned from a consistent yoga practice is the capacity to manage and optimize breathing.
Breathing techniques abound - nasal breathing, ujjayi breathing, bandha and retention practices, kapalabhati and breath of fire - but essentially, it's all about creating a relationship between one's inner awareness and one's respiratory system and learning how to utilize breath variability to alter our internal state.
This workshop will be a thorough exploration of breath both within asana practice and on its own. We will explore everything from dynamic breathing that will challenge the cardiovascular system to drawn-out breathing that will down-regulate the nervous system. Betwixt and between you will be asked to reflect on your experience of your own breath. What's it like for you when things get speedy and sweaty? What about when they get really slow?
A note on experience level and modifications- this workshop is for the experienced yoga practitioner, but does not require any special skills or athletic ability. So, all that have been doing yoga for a bit are welcome! Pregnant folks are also welcome but will be skipping some of the breathing practices.
Don’t miss the special opportunity to practice in person with longtime JPCY teacher Ame Wren. A former JP native, Ame’s lifelong study has relocated her to Virginia to pursue a PhD in American Religion.
