ROHAN VAKIL (he/him)

Since 2011, my relationship with yoga has evolved from an addendum to other workouts, to a meaningful practice that stands alone. While interning at an insurance company in Mumbai, India, I took classes from a yoga teacher at the office gym. I enjoyed yoga, but after my 4-month internship, my yoga practice floundered. I treated yoga as stretching—something to do before/after a cardio workout.

But I found a deeper connection with yoga at the start of the pandemic. After my gym closed, yoga became solace. Movement became solace. Sometimes, after practice, my body would buzz and I could focus on that feeling and return to it. I joined JPCY's yoga teacher training to take my yoga practice deeper. It did, and now I know that yoga can be so much more than just stretching. For me, moving through asanas is a process to access stillness, and stillness is a means to harness the fluctuations of the mind. It's ok if you come to my class simply to stretch, or treat yoga as something you do on your rest day from your normal workout routine. I've been there. But I invite you to be open to the possibility of finding something deeper and more meaningful from regular asana practice.

I say all this to tell you that as a teacher and a student, I am still developing, and I will do everything I can to meet you where you are. So, drop in, and arrive as you are. If you come to my class, expect pranayama, movement, followed by stillness. I generally cue towards alignment, but mostly, comfort and safety. I'll treat you as a friend, and let's share this class together in community.
